The 9th Phase
Welcome,
I'm Stefan, and this is the ninth edition of Looking For The Good Stuff, conceived and written at my HQ in Berlin, Germany. Just like Oscar Wilde, I have the simplest tastes. I am always satisfied with the best.
Rated X by an all white jury
Melvin Van Peebles, “the Rosa Parks of the American film industry” and “the godfather of black cinema”, sadly left us two days ago, 89 years old. His career took off with Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song, released 50 years ago, featuring a soundtrack by Earth Wind and Fire. It was a commercial success, and is often seen as the spark that lit the blaxpoitation fire.
The obituaries in The Washington Post and The Guardian are concise retrospects of his life and work.
Impressions of the sea
Sticky Notes: The Classical Music Podcast, run by Joshua Weilerstein, the musical director and conductor of Phoenix Orchestra in Boston, is now in the eighth season. The latest episode, issued today, focus on La Mer, Claude Debussy’s wonderful attempt to paint a musical picture of the sea of his childhood.
Don’t miss it!
Body and soul
Today WKCR-FM, the student-led radio station of Columbia University in New York, has it’s yearly celebration of John Coltrane’s birthday. If still alive, he would have been 95 years old today.
During 24 hours, they play nothing but recordings of John Coltrane! Catch the live stream while it lasts!
That's all for today. The next issue will see the light of day right after the weekend, on Monday.
All the best,
Stefan
