Edition 18
Welcome,
I'm Stefan, and this is edition 18 of Looking For The Good Stuff, conceived and written at my HQ in Berlin, Germany. Just like Oscar Wilde, I have the simplest tastes. I am always satisfied with the best.
Illicit sounds
The latest episode of the podcast Bureau of Lost Culture - which is actually a repeat of a Soho Radio Show three years ago - gives a captivating glimpse of the bootleg phenomenon, with the emphasis on the heydays of the ‘60s and ‘70s. It was a grey area between counterculture entrepreneurialism and the love of music, that to a large extent shaded away when Internet entered the media scene.
The next episode will focus on (illicit) use of sampling to create new music, featuring the two members of Coldcut, aficionado’s and practitioners of the art.
Rather like Hoagy Carmichael in a way
The latest edition of Ted Gioia’s substack takes a peek at James Bond from a jazz perspective. Ian Fleming was a (traditional) jazz fan and there is an obvious air of jazz around James Bond that simply can’t be neglected.
Cloud Nine
Cuban conga king Mongo Santamaria appears in Questlove’s documentary Summer of Soul - and it’s a good reason to take a deeper dive into his music. Michael A. Gonzales gives a good overview and some recommendations in Rock & Roll Globe.
The next edition will see the light of day next Tuesday.
All the best.
Stefan
